The Federal Capital Territory Police Command is questioning a lawmaker, Alex Ikwechegh, at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters. Ikwechegh, who serves Aba North & South Federal Constituency, allegedly assaulted a Bolt driver named Stephen Abuwatseya.
A trending video shows Ikwechegh slapping the driver when he requested his delivery fee, challenging the driver with, “Do you know who you’re talking to?” He also allegedly threatened to make the driver “disappear” without consequences.
In a statement on Monday, police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings reveal that the issue began over the delivery method of a package Abuwatseya was bringing to Ikwechegh.
According to Adeh, the event happened on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja. The police report notes that the lawmaker is being interrogated at the Maitama station.
The police expressed serious concern over Ikwechegh’s alleged disrespect toward the office of the Inspector General of Police. After reportedly slapping the driver, Ikwechegh is said to have dared him to contact the Inspector General, showing disregard for police authority.
Adeh noted that FCT Commissioner of Police Tunji Disu has ordered a detailed investigation. The Command assured that they will conduct a fair investigation, promising legal action based on the investigation’s findings.
Afriksblog notes that that a viral video which emerged on social media showed the lawmaker verbally and physically assaulting the driver for telling him to come out and get the snail the driver was meant to deliver to him.
In the video, the visibly angered member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency repeatedly insisted that the request was disrespectful given his social status.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance member also threatened to make the driver “disappear” without facing any consequences. When the driver requested the delivery fee, the politician slapped him multiple times, querying if the driver knew who he was talking to.
However, the Nigeria Police Force has stated that it was aware of the incident, and the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has invited the lawmaker for questioning
