Access Bank PLC has firmly denied allegations regarding missing funds, rejecting claims of unethical practices and a reported N500 million discrepancy in a customer’s account.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the bank described the accusations as “baseless” and reassured its customers about the security of their funds. It emphasized that protecting customers’ money is a top operational priority for the institution.
Social Media Uproar Over Allegations
Over the weekend, Martins Otse, a social media influencer widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), accused Access Bank of withholding N500 million, which he claimed belonged to the family of a deceased customer.
Mr. Otse stated that the deceased had informed their family about funds held in several bank accounts, including Access Bank, before passing away. However, when the family attempted to access the funds, they reportedly found that the money was missing.
On X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Otse raised questions about discrepancies in the bank statements related to the account, particularly the absence of transaction records between 2017 and 2019.
He wrote:
“My first question to Access Bank: why did the bank statement skip from 2016 to 2020? Where is the statement for 2017, 2018, and 2019? The next of kin will be visiting Abuja tomorrow. Access Bank, GTBank, and Keystone Bank, get ready to provide comprehensive statements. Our future depends on this! Someone worked hard for their generation, and another wants to sit on the money.”
Bank Refutes Missing Funds Allegation
In response, Access Bank categorically denied the claims, stating there were no missing funds in the specified account or any other accounts held with the bank.
“The allegations of missing funds are entirely untrue and baseless,” the statement read.
The bank explained that it had conducted a comprehensive investigation into the matter, involving independent stakeholders from the banking sector. These investigations, it claimed, confirmed that no money was missing.
Access Bank emphasized its commitment to maintaining ethical practices and safeguarding customers’ interests. The bank stated that its operations adhere to the highest standards of integrity and compliance with privacy regulations.
“Access Bank PLC operates with the highest ethical standards. We protect our customers’ interests while respecting privacy laws,” the bank stated.
It also urged the public to disregard unverified and sensational claims intended to mislead.
“While we remain engaged with our customers, we strongly advise against believing or spreading sensational and unverified allegations that are designed to misinform,” the statement concluded.
The allegations have sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some users expressed concerns about the claims, others defended Access Bank, urging for a fair investigation before drawing conclusions.
The controversy highlights the significance of transparency and trust in banking operations. Access Bank has reassured customers that it prioritizes these values, aiming to maintain confidence in its services.
This case also underscores the role of social media in amplifying issues, with influencers like VDM bringing attention to disputes involving financial institutions.
Access Bank’s Final Stance
As the story continues to unfold, Access Bank reiterated its commitment to ethical banking and urged customers to reach out directly with concerns. The bank has assured the public of its dedication to upholding trust and integrity in all operations.
