The legendary heroes are making a comeback in Avengers: Doomsday.
The Return of Familiar Faces
Most of them, at least. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are set to reunite with James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, and others.
Marvel just made a big reveal—its first X-Men movie in the MCU. Well, sort of. Along with the major cast announcement for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel confirmed that several original stars from Fox’s X-Men series are returning. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, and Kelsey Grammer are all on board. More names might be added soon, and we’ll update when they’re confirmed.
It’s expected that these actors will reprise their classic roles—Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Mystique, Nightcrawler, and Beast.
Why This is a Huge Deal
This reunion is surprising for a few reasons. First, there are two major X-Men casts—the original team from the 2000 film and the rebooted cast introduced in X-Men: First Class (2011). Though both versions appeared together in Days of Future Past, if anyone were to transition into the MCU, most would have expected the younger cast to get the nod. However, some of these actors, like Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer, have already returned to their roles in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels.
The Big Question—What Role Will They Play?
One mystery remains—what exactly will these characters do in an Avengers movie? They aren’t part of the Avengers team; they are X-Men. Could their inclusion mean they’re just there to be casualties, proving Doctor Doom’s overwhelming power? Would these legendary actors really return only to be wiped out?
The details remain unclear. It’s also uncertain if the versions of these characters in Doomsday will be the same ones from Fox’s X-Men universe. Deadpool & Wolverine, which is the true first X-Men film in the MCU, has already confirmed that multiple versions of these characters exist. And now, with Channing Tatum’s Gambit making an appearance, the idea of variants seems even more likely. Could these be brand-new versions of the X-Men? Or are they something else entirely?

Regardless of the details, seeing these beloved actors return is a major moment for superhero fans. The Fox X-Men films have had several farewell moments, but this appearance in an Avengers movie feels like a much grander send-off.
