The Imo State government has confirmed a diphtheria outbreak in Mbutu community, located in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area. Following the development, authorities have ordered the immediate closure of all schools—both public and private—in the affected area.
This urgent action was taken on Monday, May 26, 2025, after the outbreak was officially reported.
Schools on High Alert
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has asked all principals, headteachers, parents, and guardians to stay alert. Officials are also warning that the infection could be spreading to other parts of the state.

What is Diphtheria?
Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that affects the nose, throat, and sometimes the skin. It spreads through close contact and can lead to life-threatening complications if not treated early.

Parents and teachers are advised to take children to the hospital immediately if they notice any of these symptoms:
- Sore throat
- Fever

- A thick, grey coating on the tonsils or throat

The Ministries of Education and Health, along with the Aboh Mbaise Department of Health, are calling on parents, teachers, students, and community leaders to support healthcare workers in their areas.
