The Federal Government has officially ended its case against Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group that has been banned in Nigeria. He is currently facing serious charges, including terrorism and treason.
The trial is taking place at the Federal High Court in Abuja. On Thursday, June 18, 2025, the government’s lead lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), announced that the prosecution had presented enough evidence to conclude its case.
This happened after the fifth prosecution witness, referred to only as “EEE” for security reasons, testified in court. The witness gave evidence and was later cross-examined by Kanu’s defence lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu.
Awomolo told the court that they had shown enough proof, including video broadcasts involving Kanu and IPOB’s activities.
“We are satisfied with the evidence. We’re closing the case,” he said.
After that, Kanu’s lead defence lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, said they plan to file a “no-case submission.”
This legal step means the defence believes the government hasn’t proven any crime and wants the court to dismiss the case without needing Kanu to respond.
The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, is expected to give the next direction after the defence files its application.
What Happens Next?
Now that the prosecution has rested its case, all eyes are on the defence. The no-case submission could lead to the dismissal of charges if the judge agrees that the evidence isn’t strong enough.
