The Federal Government has removed the minimum age of 18 for admission into Nigerian universities. Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, announced this on Tuesday, November 5, during his first official briefing in Abuja.
Dr. Alausa also mentioned that his administration might soon review Nigeria’s education policy to tackle current issues and improve educational outcomes.
Addressing other matters, the Minister confirmed that the government will not change its recent decision to cancel over 22,700 degree certificates obtained by Nigerians from unapproved universities in neighboring countries like Togo and Benin Republic. He highlighted that the effort to shut down unaccredited institutions aims to maintain educational standards and protect the value of Nigerian qualifications.
Additionally, Dr. Alausa stressed the need for practical education as a solution to Nigeria’s unemployment problem. He suggested that universities should prioritize producing graduates with skills for the workforce, rather than just increasing the number of graduates each year.
