Igbo leaders have called for the urgent release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from the Department of State Services (DSS).
They voiced this demand at the service of songs and tributes for the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. They noted that before his passing, Iwuanyanwu aimed to secure Kanu’s release and appealed to President Bola Tinubu to fulfill this final wish.
The event, held on Saturday in Enugu, featured speakers who praised Iwuanyanwu’s significant contributions to Nigeria, describing him as a patriot and statesman.
They urged the Federal Government to honor Iwuanyanwu’s legacy by immortalising him, acknowledging his enduring impact on the nation.
The Umuada Igbo Nigeria and Diaspora, representing Igbo women, also emphasized the need for Kanu’s release and Iwuanyanwu’s immortalisation, recognizing him as a non-tribal leader.
Lolo Kate Ezeofor, President General of Umuada Igbo Nigeria and Diaspora, stated, “May God bless President Bola Tinubu for honoring our request to immortalise Chief Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and release Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody.”
At Iwuanyanwu’s lying in state at the old Eastern Nigeria Government lodge in Enugu, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah described him as a unifier during difficult times. “He had an outstanding work ethic and left a deep impression on me. He led advancements in media, sports, industry, engineering, and aviation, truly ahead of his time,” Mbah said.
Former Ebonyi State Governor Dr. Sam Egwu highlighted Iwuanyanwu’s notable character and leadership, while former Ohanaeze President General Chief Garry Igariwey praised Iwuanyanwu’s commitment to Igboland and urged the President to release Kanu.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s Secretary-General Amb Okey Emuchay recalled Iwuanyanwu’s stories about Biafra and the civil war.
Prof Uche Azikwe, wife of Nigeria’s first President, also appealed to the federal government to immortalise Iwuanyanwu.
