How it happened
A young lady, identified as Jesse Chidiebere, a 17-year-old student from Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, has been arrested for staging her own kidnapping and death. This prank caused unnecessary distress to her family and the university environ, raising concerns among students and residents of Owerri and Imo State t large.
Details of the Faked Abduction and Death
On the evening of October 26, 2024, around 10 p.m., the Orji Police Divisional Headquarters received an alarming report. Concerned citizens reached out to report that Chidiebere was missing. Shortly after, a disturbing message from her WhatsApp account circulated, claiming that she had been abducted and killed. The message further urged her family to visit the Orji Police Station for confirmation.
Police Investigation
Following the report, police officers from the Orji Division quickly launched a search operation to verify the situation. The following morning, on October 27, 2024, police discovered that Chidebere was safe. The investigation revealed that the young woman had fabricated the entire story as a social media prank. This false alarm led to wasted police resources and public distress, prompting further investigation into her actions.
The Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, voiced his dismay over such reckless behavior. CP Danjuma emphasized that this type of prank wastes valuable police resources and creates unnecessary public panic. He advised parents to guide their children, warning them against engaging in pranks that spread false information or incite fear within the community.
