On Thursday, Kano streets were covered with presidential campaign posters of former President Goodluck Jonathan, signaling his potential return to politics for the 2027 elections.
The posters were strategically displayed in major areas like the Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road, bearing messages such as, “Team New Nigeria 2027: The Goodluck Nigeria Needs—Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.”
Political Speculations Heat Up
This development has stirred discussions about the upcoming 2027 presidential race, with notable figures like Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and President Bola Tinubu expected to vie for the top position. While many speculate on Jonathan’s return, his spokesperson, Okechukwu Eze, has remained silent on the issue.
The incident mirrors the events before the 2023 elections when supporters purchased All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination forms for Jonathan. At that time, Jonathan publicly distanced himself from the move, stating he was unaware of the initiative.
Team New Nigeria Behind the Campaign
The recent poster campaign is attributed to Team New Nigeria (TNN), a political movement actively promoting its vision for national transformation. According to Modibbo Farakwai, the group’s leader, TNN’s activities are driven by Nigerians’ demand for better leadership.
“Nigerians are calling for change and looking for new leaders to drive progress. They want governance that delivers results at all levels,” Farakwai stated.
TNN has established a harmonization committee in Kano and is reportedly working to register as an official political party with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The group claims to have mobilized 26,382,000 registered voters nationwide and has already developed essential party structures, including a flag, logo, constitution, and manifesto.
Public Reactions
Prominent northern elder and founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, shared his thoughts on Jonathan’s potential candidacy.
“Jonathan, like any other qualified Nigerian, has the right to contest for the presidency. He didn’t complete his second term after losing to Muhammadu Buhari. This could be his chance to finish what he started,” Yakasai remarked.
Jonathan’s posters have reignited conversations about leadership and governance in Nigeria. While TNN positions itself as a change-driven movement, questions remain about its influence and Jonathan’s willingness to return to the political stage.
The coming months are likely to shed more light on TNN’s activities and whether Jonathan will officially declare his candidacy for the 2027 presidential race. Until then, the posters remain a bold statement of intent from a group determined to shape Nigeria’s political future.
