The organisers of a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, have been arrested following a tragic stampede on Wednesday at Islamic High School, Basorun, where several people reportedly lost their lives.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the arrest in a statement posted on his official X account. He also stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover the cause of the incident.
In his message, the governor expressed condolences to the victims and their families while assuring the public that measures have been implemented to prevent further casualties.
Makinde wrote, “Earlier today, an unfortunate incident occurred at Islamic High School Basorun during an event organised for families. Sadly, a stampede at the venue led to the loss of lives and injuries. This is a tragic day for us in Oyo State. Our thoughts are with the parents whose joy has turned to sorrow because of this incident.
“We have taken immediate steps to stop further casualties by deploying security agents to restore order. Medical personnel and ambulances were also dispatched to the scene. The event has been halted, and attendees have been evacuated from the venue. Efforts are ongoing to secure the area.
“While investigations continue, the primary organisers of the event have been taken into custody.”
The governor also assured residents that those responsible for the tragedy would face appropriate penalties.
“I assure everyone that anyone directly or indirectly involved in this unfortunate event will be held accountable. Please stay calm as security agencies carry out their investigations,” he said.
Makinde concluded his statement by offering prayers for the affected families and the victims. “Our hearts are with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May the departed souls rest in peace. Amen.”
Parents Seek Medical Help After the Stampede
Afriksblog earlier reported that many children died, and others were injured in the stampede during the funfair.
Although the state government has not disclosed the identities of the organisers, findings by PUNCH Online revealed that the event was hosted by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat.
Funfair Announced Before the Incident
On Tuesday, Agidigbo 88.7 FM shared on Facebook that Queen Naomi, the founder of Women In Need Of Guidance and Support (WINGS), was present at the radio station ahead of her 2024 Children’s Fun Fair.
The post stated, “Her Majesty Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, Founder of Women In Need Of Guidance and Support, visited the Kunle Hamzat studio in preparation for her 2024 Children Fun Fair.
“During a special programme on Agidigbo FM, Queen Prophetess Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi announced her plans to host 5,000 children aged 0-13 years from across Ibadan for free under the WINGS Foundation.
“She also revealed that the event, scheduled for Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Islamic High School Bashorun Ibadan, was strictly for children and included exciting prizes such as scholarships and other gifts.
“Queen Naomi assured parents and guardians of adequate security for all participants at the event.”
