Pa Adebanjo was a man whose wisdom guided many. He stood firm in his beliefs and worked tirelessly for democracy. His advocacy for equity and progress spanned nearly a century, making him one of the country’s most respected voices.

Tinubu acknowledged his significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, stating, “Baba was a lawyer, politician, and nationalist who belonged to the generation that laid the foundation of our country’s democracy. He was one of the last remaining heroes of Nigeria’s independence era.”

A Disciple of Awolowo and a Fighter for Democracy

Pa Adebanjo’s political career began during Nigeria’s early years of independence. He played a key role as the Organizing Secretary of the Action Group in the First Republic and later became a strong force in the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic.

He was a devoted follower of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and his political ideology reflected his mentor’s vision of equity and social justice.

A Leader in Times of National Crisis

When Nigeria faced political turmoil, Pa Adebanjo’s courage stood out. After the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, he emerged as a leading figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), an organization that fought against military rule. His role in the struggle for democracy helped restore civilian governance in Nigeria.

Tinubu recalled, “During that difficult period, Baba Adebanjo was fearless. He stood firm in the fight against dictatorship and played a major role in shaping the movement that restored democracy in Nigeria.”

A Mentor and Supporter of Tinubu’s Political Journey

Pa Adebanjo’s influence extended beyond national politics. He was also a strong supporter of Bola Tinubu’s political career. Tinubu acknowledged this, saying, “His unwavering support during my 1999 governorship campaign was crucial. As I contested for Governor of Lagos State under the Alliance for Democracy, Baba Adebanjo stood by me.”

Despite their political differences in later years, Tinubu maintained deep respect for him. “Although our political paths later took different directions, my admiration for Baba Adebanjo never changed. He was a father figure to me, and our bond remained strong until his final days.”

Condolences to His Family and the Nation

Tinubu extended his condolences to Pa Adebanjo’s family, the Afenifere group, and leaders across the Southwest. He acknowledged the impact of his leadership on the younger generation and urged Nigerians to honor his legacy.

“Let us find comfort in the lasting legacy of a man who dedicated his life to the betterment of others. His contributions will continue to inspire generations to come,” Tinubu stated.

He concluded by praying for his soul, saying, “May Baba Adebanjo’s soul find eternal rest. May the ideals he fought for remain alive in our country.”
