An All Progressives Congress (APC) support group in Abia State, the Abia Interest Association (A.B.I.A.), has called on foreign governments to impose travel restrictions on Governor Alex Otti over allegations of financial mismanagement.
In a petition released on Wednesday, September 24, the group accused the governor of failing to provide accountability for huge sums allocated to the education sector.
According to the association, more than ₦54 billion was reported to have been spent on the renovation of 51 smart schools in 2024, yet the administration has allegedly not presented verifiable evidence to back the claim.
The group further alleged that between mid-2023 and 2025, over ₦78 billion was expended without transparency. Its convener, Barrister Eze Chikamnayo, insisted that most public schools in Abia remain in poor condition, with dilapidated buildings, lack of security fencing, and absence of learning facilities.
“Instead of providing proof, the governor has been showcasing federal ASUBEB projects as if they were state-funded smart schools,” Chikamnayo stated.
The petition was addressed to the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, China, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, the European Union, and the African Union, urging them to deny Otti entry into their territories until he accounts for the funds.
Chikamnayo added that the association believes Otti uses international trips to avoid scrutiny at home, stressing that restricting his movements would pressure him to provide explanations.
The group also accused the Labour Party-led administration of taking credit for federal road projects and presenting them as state achievements.
“This is about safeguarding the future of Abia’s children. Mismanagement in education robs them of opportunities and violates their rights. Governor Otti must not be allowed to sweep this matter aside,” Chikamnayo concluded.
