Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives from Abia, has issued a public apology after a viral video showed him assaulting a Bolt driver who came to his residence to deliver a package.
Ikwechegh acknowledged that his behavior fell short of the standards expected of public officials, admitting that he failed in his duty to uphold the trust his constituents and Nigerians have placed in him. He expressed deep regret, stating, “As a public servant, I recognize the trust my constituents and the Nigerian people place in me. I am truly sorry for my actions, which did not meet the expected standards.”
In his apology on Monday, Ikwechegh expressed regret for the distress and embarrassment his actions caused to the driver, Abuwatseya, as well as to his constituents and the public. He affirmed his commitment to cooperate fully with the Nigerian Police, supporting their investigation and ensuring accountability.
Addressing the public, Ikwechegh stated, “I, Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, Member of the House of Representatives, wish to address a troubling incident that took place recently at my residence. A video has circulated showing my unacceptable conduct towards an Uber driver who was delivering a waybill for me. I apologize for my actions, recognizing that they were inappropriate for a public official.”
He admitted that his behavior had caused harm and embarrassment to many, especially the driver and his constituents, adding, “I understand that my actions have caused embarrassment to the driver, my constituents, and the country as a whole.”
Ikwechegh assured the public of his full cooperation with the police investigation, saying, “I fully support the Nigerian Police in their investigation of this matter. My commitment is to ensure justice is served and accountability upheld.”
He also commended the Nigerian Police Force for acting swiftly to uphold the law and protect citizens’ rights. Ikwechegh noted, “I appreciate the prompt response from my party and the Nigerian Police in condemning my actions. This shows our shared commitment to upholding the law and safeguarding citizens’ rights.”
To prevent similar incidents, Ikwechegh stated that he is taking immediate action to address the underlying issues that contributed to his behavior. He revealed, “I am seeking professional counseling to prevent any recurrence of such actions. Additionally, I will engage in community service projects aimed at promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.”
He further called on all Nigerians to join him in building a culture of respect and tolerance. “We must work together to create a society where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. I thank you for your understanding and invite you to join me on this journey toward healing and growth,” Ikwechegh added.
The incident, which was captured in a video that went viral on Monday, showed a distressed driver, Abuwatseya, recording the altercation with Ikwechegh outside the lawmaker’s residence in Maitama, Abuja. The video displayed a visibly angry Ikwechegh slapping and insulting the driver, allegedly because the driver had requested him to step outside to collect the package he was delivering.
In the video, Ikwechegh also threatened the driver, warning he could make him “disappear” without any consequences. This has sparked a public outcry, with many condemning his actions.
Following the incident, Ikwechegh was called in by the police for questioning at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters. The police criticized the lawmaker for bringing the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, into disrepute by daring the driver to contact the Inspector General after the assault.
